Introducing chapter institutions, our newest membership category

Mobilizing collaborative structures in higher education for sustainable development

We are delighted to introduce our newest membership category: SOS International Chapter Institutions.

SOS International is a global alliance of student-led networks, higher education institutions, and associated organizations committed to transforming higher education through collaborative action. We support institutions in building action-oriented sustainability coalitions on campus and beyond, creating inclusive staff-student-community partnerships that embed sustainability into teaching, research, governance and campus life. By promoting systems-thinking, green skills, experiential learning, and global citizenship, we empower students to become leaders in addressing environmental and social challenges.

Our approach aligns with UNESCO’s ESD for 2030 agenda and GreenComp: the European sustainability competence framework, equipping learners with theknowledge, values, and competencies needed to drive transformative educationand sustainable development.

In 2022, we inherited the Green Office Movement, a UNESCO-award winning network of collaborative student-staff teams across European Universities. In 2026, our 22 Green Office members continue to drive innovation in sustainability and environmental justice, working in partnership with their institutional management teams.

Our new chapter institutions membership program is a critical next step in expanding our global membership portfolio. We aim to reach and engage education institutions from all global regions, building upon our inclusive approach and drawing from diverse epistemologies. Our expanded member network will bring together diverse voices to co-create progressive ideas, drawing from their culture, heritage and landscape, at a critical time for planet Earth.

The SOS International chapter membership program is designed for institutions with existing or emerging staff-student sustainability structures, environmental clubs, or ambitions to strengthen engagement and collaborative governance. Our chapter institution membership program includes:

-         in-person or virtual training, mentoring, and coaching;

-         access to the SOS International summit, with free or discounted delegate rates;

-         membership of our global network with monthly virtual networking;

-         opportunities for student representation at global climate, education, and social justice events and policy-setting spaces.
